SINGLES
HEAVEN
SENT AN ANGEL
(HUT) 1991
CDS - HUT CD7
1.Heaven Sent An Angel
2.Painting Pictures
3.Molasses
4.Cherish
A tremendous first single..........stunning,
it still sounds good today, as the vocals lift the lovely lyrics right up..nice..
All songs were written by Mat and recorded at First Protocol (in London, I
think), in 1991.
Wow these sleeve notes suck.....
CRIMSON
(HUT) 1992
CDS - HUTCD9
Numbered 7" - HUT9
1.Crimson (7"/CD)
2.Don't Ever Leave (7"/CD)
3.Drowning Inside(CD ONLY)
4.Further Away(CD ONLY)
Produced by Stephen Street
(famous for his Blur stuff!) and the weakest (in my opinion) of the first
3 singles.
Thanks to Merrick for filling me in on the tracks from the Cd!
VENICE
(HUT) 1992
Blue Vinyl 7"
CDS - HUTCD14
1.Venice
2.Red All Over
3.Since Yesterday
Second single and there's little to be gleaned from the CD!
Though Venice is a fantastic tune and the B-sides on this one were ace.
Thanks to James, who mailed me to say that Since Yesterday is a cover of a
song by Strawberry Switchblade (http://www.algonet.se/~akeen/strawberry/).
CRADLE
SNATCH
(HUT)
(1992)
CDS - ??????????
10" - HUTEN26
1.Cradle
Snatch (Edit) (CDS/10")
2.Don't You Wonder Why? (CDS/10")
3.If We Could Spend Some Time (CDS)/Crimsin (10")
4.Cradle Snatch (CDS)/If We Could Spend Some Time (10")
This is one of the second album singles, not as good as the previous three,
but still showing their talent for decent b-sides...
Again all songs were by Mat, produced and mixed by Nigel Gilroy with the band.
These tracks were recorded at the greenhouse in London in December 1992.
Additional Members - Yvette Lacy (Flute), Patrick Miller (Didgeredoo) and
Tony Wallman (Congas).
Thanks to Britt for sending me this single, I wear you chain
and the Cold Water Flat album.
I WEAR
YOUR CHAIN
(HUT)
(1993)
CDS -
1.I
Wear Your Chain (Screaming Mix)
2.Carry Me Away
3.Bottled Out (Acoustic)
4.Ruined
The
B-sides are running dry a bit for this less than great later single....
Mat was now listed playing Piano, Organ and Mandolin....
The recording was as for Cradle Snatch, although remixing was done at Eastcote
in May '93...not really all that different though....

COLD
WATER FLAT
(HUT) 1993
CDHUT8
CD/LP
1.Cool
Blue
2.Shakesdown
3.Cradle Snatch
4.I Wear Your Chain
5.Nothing Without You
6.Bottled Out
7.Coming Back
8.Cold Water Flat
9.Makes No Difference All The Same
10.Wave
Not the greatest LP, the tracklisting for Baby's Crying would indicate that this was somewhat the result of "difficult second album" syndrome, but nonetheless, it puts a lot of today's indie to shame.
According to Aaron,
"The US version went as follows:
1.Cool Blue
2.Shakesdown
3.Crimson (new version, different from the single version)
4.Cradle Snatch
5.I Wear Your Chain,
6.Nothing Without You
7.Bottled Out
8.Coming Back
9.Medicine
10.Smile
11.Makes No Difference All The Same
12.Wave"
Also, "There
was a limited uk vinyl version of the album that came with a
bonus 7" containing these songs: Medicine Smile, Venice (brick lane
demo)"
So here's an "AMG
EXPERT REVIEW:"
Apparently enamored with the sound and vision of My Bloody
Valentine and other shoegazer bands, Revolver stepped up to the plate in 1993
with Cold Water Flat. With vocals that recall Ride (especially in the tinny
nature of the recording) and scads of angst, the band produced 11 tracks of
swirling lo-fi dream pop. It's a charming listen, with some songs standing
out as real treats of the genre, but the album lacks variation between tracks
and the band seems limited in its stumbling for new chords and jangling guitar
motifs. The two opening tracks are true gems. "Cool Blue" gives
off a sad atmosphere, while being quite exhilarating at the same time, punctuated
by tribal-sounding drums and brittle vocals from singer/guitarist Mat Flint.
"Shakesdown" exudes a shy fragility worthy of Depeche Mode's Martin
Gore, with Flint singing that he has "found a way to keep the shakes
down." It's a touching song. "I Wear Your Chain" sees the band
picking up the pace, with an interesting mix of staccato piano and crashing
cymbals. But what's a shoegazer record without swirling, distorted guitars?
"Bottled Out" certainly swirls; one imagines Swervedriver as fronted
by the Pale Saints' Ian Masters. "Makes No Difference All the Same"
is rather stunning; it's built on a divine hook, and it features Flint's most
confident, energetic vocals on the album. "Wave" rounds things out
in epic fashion, with the band members sounding so shoegazer that they were
probably burning holes in their moccasins. Cold Water Flat is a very good
debut album. With less reliance on soaring, emotional vocals and more variations
in mood, the album would have been even stronger. Revolver wasn't up to the
level of My Bloody Valentine, Ride, or the Pale Saints, but Cold Water Flat
certainly showed promise for better things to come.
