midway still i won't try double cd set that boasts the very best of the two roughneck records albums 'dial square' and 'life's too long' which were released in the early 90's. midway still were part of the london scene that included snuff, senseless things, mega city four and perfect daze. the sound was gorgeous unbalanced hardcore pop punk. this 41 track set includes unreleased demo and live tracks plus a great cover of my bloody valentine's 'you made me realise'

Ok, have the Cds now (Jan 25th), and, as expected, it's a great compilation.
Couple of minor things, the Live track isn't great quality...at all, there's no Day In The Life Of A Showgirl (quite a loss, though there's an mp3 on Tim's site, link on the main MWS page), and no Peel session.
Beyond that, a great compilation and a tremendous introduction to the band.
And the originals....
I WONT TRY
(Roughneck UK 1991) (HYPE10) (7", 12", CDS?)
7": I Won't Try / Apple
12": 1.I Won't Try
2.Apple
3.Daynight
Brilliant, and critically acclaimed single,
(Number 12 in the NME singles of the year for 1991, above 'only love can break your heart'
by St. Etienne and 2 Prince singles). Great lyrics, serious growling heartache...well
produced (well, sounded great on 7")..basically, seek and listen...essential!
WISH
(ROUGHNECK UK 1991) (HYPE13CD) (7",CDS, 12"?)
1.Wish
2.You Made Me Realise
3.Everywhere I Look
4.Who You Are
(7" only contained 1&2)
Backed with their cover of YOU MADE ME REALISE, this
was one of the best singles Midway Still produced...again, essential, just for the
cover..which was better live, but hell, that's always the way....find......
DIAL SQUARE
(ROUGHNECK UK 1992) (NECKCD8) (LP, CD)

13.Heaven
The first album, produced by Don Fleming, was
available in two versions so it would seem, though I don't know what extra tracks came
with it. Basically, this was ACE! Good/great versions of top songs...we like...
Some of the versions were overshadowed by session counterparts ('Come Down' was F***ing
brilliant on the J.P. session), but basically a great introduction.
It was mastered at Abbey Road studios too! Exxxcellent...
BETTER
THAN BEFORE
(ROUGHNECK UK 1992) HYPE15 (7",
CDS, 12"?)
(12" - HYPE
15T, CDS - HYPE15CD)
CDS/12":
1.Better Than Before
2.In Front Of You
3.I Won't Try (Lazy Version)
4.What U Said (Shimmyglitter Mix)
(7" only contained 1&2)
A video was made for this, again ACE single! Which had lots of
lovely beachs rolling away, explosions..the whole nine yards...a very, very
good single...er, other tracks?
Not so great, though the lazy version of "I Won't Try" is ace!
TOUR 7"
CAPTAIN AMERICA 'I Won't Try'/MIDWAY
STILL 'Wow!'
(ROUGHNECK/PAPERHOUSE UK 1992) HYPE18 (7" only)
This included Captain America (later Eugenuis)
covering "I Won't Try" And Midway Still covering C.A.'s first single
"Wow".
I'll tape this for anyone who wants it, as it's brilliant and, unlike the other
records, you can't find it ANYWHERE!
Eugenius were one of Kurt Cobain's favourite bands (though at the time they
were still called Captain America).
It was a FREE? 7" given away at a ULU gig with both bands on the bill.
It came in a black 7" sleeve and had the converse star in green on both
sides...
Side Midway: MIDWAY STILL 'Wow!'
Side Captain: CAPTAIN AMERICA 'I Won't Try'
LIFES TOO LONG
produced by Frankie Stubbs. CD/LP/LP with 7" single.
01.Jamie & Gigi
02.Lies
03.Straight Line
04.Out Of View
05.Sell These Years
06.Counting Days
07.Kemper
08.Disappear
09.Cyclops
10.Summercide
11.Strange How
12.Goodbye
Do I have to? OK, well this was, how can I put
this...dissapointing....er, rubbish IMHO, and if we're being honest...but not the
songs..those were still good, just the production made the whole thing so tame and
lifeless...
the free 7" featured this great combination of The Autuers' "Death Of A
Showgirl" (Luke Haines' is now in Black Box Recorder!), and The Beatles "A Day
In The life"...and if we're being honest was better than the rest of the LP...
There are moments...but compared to the 1st...nope..., we'll pass. I've never quite worked
out why Frankie "Leatherface" Stubbs couldn't get a more roaring sound, the
whole albums very tame..which given his own bands sound you'd think would be the last
thing it'd sound like...
FREE 7" With Album
(ROUGHNECK 199?) HYPE26A/B (7" only)
1.Fly Me To The Moon
2.A Day In The Life Of A Showgirl
Brilliant mix up of an Auteurs' (Luke Haine's band, he's now in Black Box recorder) track and the Beatles "Day In The Life". "Fly Me To The Moon" is another cover. Ace little 7".
SLUGABED
(ROUGHNECK HYPE 19) CDS? 12"?
(NEED A COPY)
CD/10"
1. Just Get Stuck
2. Abnegate
3. Three Five Nine
4. Still Get By
Don't have it anymore, not that impressed at the time as I recall, sorry, I could be
wrong, the mind plays tricks!
NOTE: Need a copy...
COUNTING DAYS
(ROUGHNECK) CDS, 5"?
(NEED
A COPY)
CD/10"
1. Counting Days
2. Mod Song No.2
3. Fragments
(7" only contained 1&2)
I don't have this either, I'm afraid, I had this and
slugabed at the time, but they, like the second album, just didn't have the shine of
earlier releases, and I sold em....which means, unless I can find em again, there's little
chance of any details....don't get these unless you're a REAL completist!
Start with "I Won't Try" and the first album and then see how you feel!
F*ck You (ANTIPOP) 2001, CDS
1.F**K YOU
2.Since You've Been Gone
3.Counting Days (Bongo Version)
4.F**k You (Jazz Version)
A new single to go with the new tour dates! Pretty cool A side, the cover versions a tad
bog standard (these things are always funnier live), but the 3rd and 4 th tracks are worth
having for a laugh.
Certainly worth picking up, ONCE YOU'VE GOT "I Won't Try" and the first
album!
NOTE: So this discog. is, I know, unfinished!
No sound links, bad order, but it WILL improve.
Any help would be much appreciated...
LIVE GIGS BOOTLEGS
LONDON WHITE HORSE (21/12/91)
Top version of 'Blew' guys.....er, this isn't the best gig in the world, but hey, it's a
gig on tape!
NEW/SPIN OFF BANDS
The lead singer of Midway Still (Paul), formed this
band, who've had a couple of releases in the last year, the best (IMHO) being
"Smile", which still features the great gruffed vocals!
They've not got a web site I can find on the Net..but hey, there's a little mention here.
AND BUY 'SMILE'...there's a little page under the link...not much there though...
Have a look at the links page or check Antipop, I'm not sure of their status now the
'Still have reformed......
